This conference launched the fifth annual State of the Game report focusing
on the governance of the football industry. This year’s report
includes: analysis of trends in the corporate governance of clubs and
the impact of supporters' trusts, drawing on five-year data set; a review
of regulatory changes in domestic and European football; an appraisal
of Lord Burns' proposals on the structure of the Football Association;
a map of the stakeholder networks in which lubs operate, charting the
links between clubs, local government, football's governing bodies,

This conference launched the third annual State of the Game report focusing
on the governance of the football industry. This year’s report
looks at trends in the corporate governance of clubs and compares performance
to that of listed companies in all business sectors. The report also
analyses the role of the football authorities and other stakeholders
including local community groups, local authorities and supporters,
and assesses their contribution to promoting and enhancing the sustainability
of football clubs.
September 2002 Supporters Direct National Conference
Supporters Direct held its Second Annual Conference at Birkbeck
on Thursday 12th September 2002. The event
was primarily aimed at supporters who are actively working within
Supporters' Trusts and those fans who are thinking of starting a Trust.
In addition, all those with an interest in the developments surrounding
Supporters' Trusts also attended. The
Rt Hon Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell
MP commended Supporters Direct on the good work supporters' trusts
had already done in transforming the game. The Conference also saw
the launch of the research report, 'The
State of the Game: The Corporate Governance of Football Clubs 2002',
produced by the Football Governance Research Centre.

March 2001 - How To Establish a Supporter
Trust: North-East Seminar
The Football Governance Research Centre, in co-operation with Supporters
Direct, the supporters’ trust initiative, organised an information
seminar for those North-East supporters’ groups interested in establishing
supporters’ trusts at their clubs. Newcastle United supporters for
instance, have recently established a supporter-shareholder trust.
The seminar took place on the evening of Friday 30th
March 2001 in Durham.

The seminar served as an opportunity
to introduce the work of Supporters Direct, the new government backed
supporters’ trust promotion organisation, to supporters’ groups
in the North East. The programme ran as follows:

Lomax, Chair of Supporters Direct (Chairman of Northampton
Town Supporters Trust and elected Director to Northampton Town Club,
1992-99) – `Supporters Direct’ - Brian outlined the philosophy
and aims of Supporters Direct; the achievements to date; the practical
services offered; further contact details for groups.

Jaquiss, Cobbetts Solicitors – ‘Setting up a Football
Community Mutual’ – Kevin outlined the various institutional models
of mutual ownership available to supporters’ groups wishing to form
trusts, with particular focus on the Industrial & Provident Society
(IPS) model.
20.10 - 21.30 - Question
and Answer Session - an opportunity was given to address questions
related directly to your club and supporters’ group to the above panel,
and to discuss the merits of establishing a supporters’ trust at your
club.

2001: Fresh Players, New Tactics: Lessons from Northampton Town Supporters
Trust
The FGRC has conducted this project to examine the lessons that can
be drawn from the experiences of the longest established Supporters'
Trust in English football, at Northampton Town FC. The FGRC directed
team has held focus groups with trust members in Northampton and Wellingborough
and conducted in-depth face-to-face interviews with local sports journalists,
trust members, a leading councillor, the Trust director on the board
of the football club and a previous director. Based on this information
the FGRC is producing a report to highlight how Supporters' Trusts
can stimulate, maintain and develop community-based initiatives. This
seminar will launch and discuss this research paper.

A morning seminar covering the key issues involved with establishing
a supporters' trust. Kevin Jaquiss, a leading Manchester-based lawyer
specialising in legal models of mutual ownership, discussed the possibilities
offered by the Industrial and Provident Society model for football
supporters' groups.

July 1999 - The Governance
and Regulation of Professional Football
A one day conference attracting 200 delegates from business, government
and UK and European Universities to discuss governance and regulation
issues in football. Included speakers such as Richard Scudamore, (then)
Chief Executive of the Football League, Gordon Taylor, Chief Executive
of the Professional Footballers Association, and Tom Pendry MP, Chairman
of the Football Trust.
